4 An architecture for security of enterprise level 802.11 networks
Virtual Private Network (VPN) technology has been used for several years for providing end-to-end security in wired networks where environment is thought to be insecure. Confidentiality and integrity of transmitted data is achieved by means of a secure tunnel at IP layer. Since the tunneling protocols operate above wireless link layer, VPNs can be utilized for encryption and message integrity of 802.11 networks (Henry and Luo, 2002). As for access control and authorization, firewalls, which are at the heart of wired networks, can be used in wireless LANs for these purposes as well (Murthy et al., 1998). When either firewalls or VPN gateways are used in security of wireless local area networks, centralized server based solutions can be used for authentication, one example of which is Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS). The proposed architecture of this paper utilizes the tools and techniques mentioned above in such a way that requirements of enterprises for a layered security are met. The difference from methods suggesting firewalls is the use of location and time information together with user privileges in access control. Also, we have chosen to determine location of the client from IP subnet information. Although there are more accurate and stable methods to determine location such as GPS technology, which is utilized in Conley (2003) for a similar purpose, using IP is considerably simpler. Although IP addresses can easily be spoofed, this does not constitute a considerable security weakness for our architecture because location information is used as an extra measure and an attacker with spoofed IP still has to pass through strong authentication mechanism to access critical resources.
