Hushi, one of the most influential figures in modern histroy of China, played an unique role in the course of Chinese culture.He had been advocating writings in the vernacular since the May Fourth Movement till his last breath. As a scholor, he had an ambiguous attitude towards politics.However,in the political environment, not only personality of a scholor was shown,but also political character was figured prominently in him.Based on the emxample of Human Rights Movement, this thesis will explore the internal contradictory of the two characters in Hushi.

Hu shi, as one of the most influential figuers in China's contemparary history, has played a prominent role in transformation of Chinese culture(Chinese cultural modernization). From Vernacular Movement in May Fourth peiod to his death, Hu shi, as a literary figure, had always kept a lukewarm relation with politics. In the real political environment, he has showned both literary temperament and political personality. This article introduces the example of human rights campaign to explore the inner conflict between these two characters of Hushi.
