The transient performance of the proposed control scheme has been tested with a rated load reversal at
1000 rpm and 100 rpm. As shown in Fig. 13 and Fig. 14, the input current is almost in phase with the
corresponding phase voltage during motoring operation and the phase of input current is opposite
during regenerative braking. This means that the matrix converter draws electric power to DC machine
mechanical power from the AC mains with nearly sinusoidal waveforms and unity input power factor.
When the torque is reversed, it generates power back to the mains. It is noted that both input and stator
current waveforms are sinusoidal immediately after the step command whether at a low or high speed,
under light or rated load.

This paper has presented a new DTC method for matrix converter drives using two switching
configurations at each control cycle. The two-level torque hysteresis comparator allows a reduction of
ripples in torque and currents. The proposed method makes use of two input current vector, instead of
one in original DTC, in each cycle period to improve the input current quality without any negative
effect on the motor side performance and furthermore simplify the control scheme. The input power
factor hysteresis controller, the input displacement angle estimator and the low pass filter are not
required in the new DTC scheme. The proposed DTC and original DTC have been compared by
simulations and experiments. The distortion of the input current is reduced but the output performance
is preserved without adding its complexity. Both steady state and dynamic conditions have been tested
in wide speed range with light or full load.
