ããI wanted to pass on my experience to others who are planning a trip to Beijing and are not traveling as part of a formal tour. That was my situation in July of this year when I went to Beijing with my executive MBA class for 5 days. Afterwards I wanted to travel a bit on my own and wasn't sure whether my best bet was to try joining a tour there, are creating my own itinerary and hiring a guide.
ããI benefited from reading this forum and got a referral for a tour guide whom I would recommend to others. She was completely honest, always looking for ways to save me money. For example she negotiated prices when we shopped, and if something was priced too high she would tell me I was being gauged. Also, she never steered to a business where she would get a kick-back. (Out of curiosity, I tried out another guide recommended by the concierge at my hotel - The Peninsula and she was no more knowledgeable, less ethical and more expensive. So much for trusting that a high end hotel has better guides than finding a guide using your own resources!)
ããMy guide's other attributes were a good command of English and a desire to do the best job for me she could. My caveat, don't expect the depth or expertise of going with, say, a China scholar. Because my trip was a by-product of business school, I didn't have the time to do adequate historical/academic research. When I got home from the trip and graduated I read a book on China and that background would have enriched my experience.
ããSo, in a nut shell, please feel free to contact me if you want my tour guide's email. She was always reliable, on time, and, as the daughter of farmers, hardworking and completely down-to-earth. If you ask she'll even take you to meet her family in a town outside of Beijing. Had I the time, it would have been a unique experience to really see a personal side of life in China that a formal tour doesn't afford a traveler.
ããI had a terrific time, and wish you all the same.
