席慕蓉全名是穆伦·席连勃，意即大江河，“慕蓉”是“穆伦”的谐译。1943年农历10月15日生于四川重庆城郊金刚坡，祖籍内蒙古察哈尔盟明安旗。
写诗只是作为累了一天之后的休息。她写诗，为的是“纪念一段远去的岁月，纪念那个只曾在我心中存在过的小小世界”。一个“真”字熔铸于诗中而又个性鲜明。在她的诗中，充满着一种对人情、爱情、乡情的悟性和理解。著作有诗集、散文集、画册及选本等五十余种，读者遍及海内外。近十年来，潜心探索蒙古文化，以原乡为创作主题。2002年受聘为内蒙古大学名誉教授。新作《席慕蓉和她的内蒙古》即用优美的文字和亲手拍摄的照片，记录了席慕蓉自1989年与“原乡”邂逅后，17年来追寻游牧文化的历程。
