Soon Tommy’s parents would arrive for a meeting because Tommy failed his schoolwork and behaved strangely. Neither parent knew that I had called the other.
Tommy was happy and good at his schoolwork. How-ever, his parents had separated and wanted to divorce1. That troubled him a lot.
Tommy’s mother came and took one of the chairs near my desk. Soon the father arrived. Good! At least they both cared about Tommy. They looked at each other in surprise.
I tried to find the right words to bring these two together, to help them see what they were doing to their son. However, the words wouldn’t come.
And then, I found a tear-stained2 English paper on Tommy’s desk and I gave it to Tommy’s mother quietly. She read it and then without a word handed it to her husband. He looked unhappy. Then his face softened3. He studied the words for a long time.
At last, he put the paper in his pocket, and gave one hand to his wife. She wiped the tears from her eyes and smiled up at him. He helped her with her coat and they left together.
I learned that I got the words to make that family together again. They were the words of a small boy’s troubled heart. The words were, "Dear Mom ...Dear Dad ... I love you ... I love you ... I love you."
