In the village of Little Hangleton, a very old house called
The Riddle House sat on a hillside. It had once belonged to the
Three brothers of the Black family. They had been known as the
Bravest and cleverest in the village, they were proud to be
Descendants of the great Black family, who had once been
Honorary Wizards.
One day, as they were walking together
Through a forest, they came upon a hooded figure holding a staff.
The figure introduced himself as Death and said that he had come
To fetch one of the brothers. The two youngest brothers were
Terrified, but the eldest brother was not. He was so confident in
His own powers that he taunted Death to try and take him. As Death
Rose up to his full height and rustled his black robe, the eldest
Brother cast the Killing Curse at him. The bolt of energy missed
Death completely and flew into the sky, disappearing into thin air.
Death, amused by the elder brother's arrogance, said he was not
Proud of his actions and that he would regret his foolishness. The
Youngest brother was so scared that he fainted clean away, but the
Second brother stepped forward, furious at his elder sibling's
Arrogance. He demanded that Death take him instead. But Death only
Laughed and said that it was not yet his time. The second brother,
Hearing this, backed down and was silent.
Death then turned to the third and
Youngest brother, who had remained silent throughout the exchange.
He asked the boy what he would do. The boy, who had no magic at his
Command, knew that Death could not be resisted, and so he asked for
A moment to bid his family goodbye. Death agreed and disappeared,
Leaving the three brothers standing together in the deep wood.
The third brother went home to tell his family that he would die
Soon. To their surprise, he told them not to be afraid and that he
Would not be alone. He told them that Death was here and that he was
Not to be resisted. Then he bid them goodbye forever. The villagers
Who had gathered at the house to see what was going on were also
Called to bid the third brother goodbye. They all wept to see such a
Fine young man standing on the threshold of death. But the third brother
Smiled and said that no tears should be shed for him and that he would meet them again in a better place. Then he walked out of the house, never to return.

There were once three brothers who were traveling along a lonely, winding road at twiligtht. In time the brothers reached a river too treacherous to pass. But being learned in the magical arts, the three brothers simply waved their wands and made a bridge. Before they could cross however, they found their path blocked by a hooded figure. It was Death and he felt cheated. Cheated because travelers would normally drown in the river. But Death was cunning. He pretended to congratulate the three brothers on their magic and said that each had carned a prize for having been clever enouth to evade him. The oldest asked for a wand more powerful than any in existence. So Death fashioned him one from an elder tree that stood nearly. The second brother decided he wanted to humiliate Death even further and asked for the power to recall loved ones from the grave. So Death plucked a stone from the river and offered it to him. Finally, Death turned to the third brother. A humble man, he asked for something that would allow him to go forth from that place without being followed by Death.
