3. The role of suppression in figurative language comprehension
Although we are intrigued by Gibbs' (1994) proposal that the distinction between
figurative and literal language is more apparent than real, we agree that some uses of anguage appear to be more figurative than others. In the second half of our paper, we shall address the role of suppression in the comprehension of figurative language, such as metaphors, idioms, and proverbs.
