Both VISA and Master cards are widely acceptable here in the UK. But I would suggest you to apply a Great Wall master card (pound sterling card) from Bank of China which, I personally think, is pretty handy. You don't necessarily have to have a double currency card as you will be either in UK or Chine while you cannot be in both.
